An uncomfortably rich SRK

Shahrukh Khan Source: Mid Day

After Forbes ranked Shahrukh Khan as the Indian celebrity making the most money at Rs 257 crore, Khan came out with a modest reply.
Talking about achieving the numero uno position in the wealth list, SRK said, “I don’t know what to say. I feel embarrassed about it. There are a lot of people behind me who take care of my business.
So their efforts cannot be undermined. Just like in films where it is made by someone else and my face is used, even in business it is managed by someone else and my face is used on magazines.
I like it though because I give good interviews but only after asking my associates how to go about it. Also being on Forbes is a good thing because it gives recognition to the kind of business that we are doing.”

In the Forbes list, Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachan has made it to number two and three.

Police Forces 'Failing Vulnerable Victims'

An investigation has identified four forces as "inadequate" in the way they protect and support those at risk.

Some forces 'inadequate' in how they help victims.

Sky Correspondent
More than two thirds of police forces in England and Wales are failing vulnerable victims, including children suffering sexual abuse.
An investigation by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) identified four forces as "inadequate" in the way they protect and support those at risk.
Bedfordshire, Essex, Staffordshire and Surrey were judged as having "serious weaknesses" in their ability to safeguard and investigate cases involving vulnerable people.
Inspectors said 27 forces "caused concern" or had "areas for improvement" or both. No force was rated as "outstanding".
Zoe Billingham, who led the investigations, said: "Victims of crime and anti-social behaviour who are vulnerable in some way are in greatest need of the police's protection and support but HMIC's inspection found that most forces require improvement in how they protect and support them."
In response to the HMIC report, Staffordshire Police said : "We are developing a range of improvements to give confidence to our communities, partners and HMIC that Staffordshire Police is keeping people safe."
Essex Police accepted the findings as "profoundly disappointing" but added "a huge amount of work has been under way for the last two years and more to improve how Essex Police protects vulnerable people".
Bedfordshire Police told Sky News: "A significant amount of work has been done since the inspection earlier in the year and we are pleased to see positive improvements emerging."
And Surrey Police's response was: "The Force has fundamentally overhauled its capabilities and substantially increased the number of officers and staff working in these areas."
The findings come at the same time as a linked HMIC inquiry warned units dedicated to domestic abuse are on the verge of being "overwhelmed" following a 31% surge in reported cases.
This spike is partially due better recording of domestic abuse violence and the increased willingness from victims to come forward.
The report said all 43 forces in England and Wales had responded well to a highly critical 2014 report and all had made some level of improvement.
But it stressed all vulnerable victims needed the same level of support and "even small failures may have tragic consequences".

Angelina Jolie Pitt accepts presidency of film fest panel

Bophana Center founder Rithy Panh gives actress Angelina Jolie Pitt a tour of the centre earlier this year as part of research for the adaptation of First They Killed My Father.

The Cambodia International Film Festival received the endorsement of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars yesterday with the announcement that actress Angelina Jolie Pitt had accepted the presidency of the festival’s newly formed Honorary Committee.
The festival’s sixth edition will run from December 4 to 10 showcasing more than 130 films from 34 countries in eight screening venues across Phnom Penh.
The Honourary Committee was established this year “gathering professionals in cinema who support the development of the Cambodian film industry”, a CIFF press release said.
“Its members, originating from different backgrounds and continents, share the will to contribute to producing or promoting meaningful films in Cambodia, to see Cambodian cinema rise nationally and internationally.”
Jolie Pitt’s acceptance of the presidency was a “great honour for Cambodia and an encouragement for the new generation of filmmakers”.
The actress and filmmaker was quoted in the press release as saying:
“I’m proud to support the Cambodian International Film Festival and Cambodia as a home for vibrant and innovative filmmaking.
Cambodia’s rich history, long culture and talented people mean it has a huge amount to offer the region and the world.
I am honoured to be part of the 2015 Festival Committee, and looking forward to the exciting mix of Cambodian and international films we will be sharing with you this year.”
Other CIFF Honourary Committee members include filmmakers Rithy Panh, Kalyanee Mam, Sok Visal, Caylee So and James Gerrand, producer Nicholas Simon and film festival curator Park Sungho.
Jolie Pitt’s relationship with Cambodia stretches back to 2000 when she starred in the action adventure film Tomb Raider, which helped put Angkor Wat on the global tourism map.
She later adopted her son Maddox from the Kingdom and after establishing the Maddox Jolie Pitt Foundation wildlife sanctuary was given Cambodian citizenship.

She is currently filming an adaptation of the Khmer Rouge biography First They Killed My Father in Siem Reap and Battambang for Netflix.

Young Cambodians with Hollywood dreams

Cambodian-American fashion designer and filmmaker Remy Hou (left) helps children in the Project Accessible Hollywood course set up a shot.

Nearly 20 young Cambodians are taking part in a month-long course on how to make movie magic armed with little more than a smartphone and a good idea.
The course – being run by the California-based Project Accessible Hollywood – kicked off on Sunday when the group began making a series of minute-long short films shot at iconic Phnom Penh locations such as Independence Monument and the Central Market.
Leading the group of 18 Cambodian 10- to 16-year-olds and a pair of young Russian-Americans is Cambodian-American fashion designer Remy Hou, who recently won first prize at Phnom Penh’s Chaktomuk Short Film Festival, and Dutch art promoter Janneke Hoogstraaten.
“I think what we’re doing is not just about film but empowering the kids and giving them access to explore the beauty of Cambodia,” Hou said. “They’re loving it, and they have all these ideas. They just need someone there to support them and guide them,” he added.
PAH was founded by Christopher R Coppola – nephew of Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and older brother of American actor Nicolas Cage – with the aim of empowering underprivileged youth through filmmaking using everyday technology.
The project has previously been run in Belize and New Mexico, but this is the first time in Cambodia.
Early next month, the group will split into three groups to collaborate over Skype with teams of US teens based in Los Angeles.
The resulting short films will be judged in a competition by Christopher Coppola at the end of the course.
Nine of the children were enrolled by Chibodia, a German NGO that manages children’s homes, health clinics and schools for impoverished communities in and around Phnom Penh.
Chibodia youth manager and English teacher Timon Seibel, who also started a music training program for underprivileged youth called CamProject, said that sending his students to join the creativity-enhancing project was a “no brainer”.

Timon said that when the PAH program was over he planned to buy a GoPro camera so that the children could continue making movies.
